Introduction to Zero Waste | News of the Vegetarian and Vegan World

In this article we are going to talk about the movement zero waste or zero waste, movement whose main objective is to leave the minimum footprint on the planet . How can this be achieved? Reducing to zero or to the minimum possible the garbage we generate . This may seem complicated due to the amount of garbage that we produce today, but some changes in our day to day could allow us to get it.

It is said that there are two fundamental forms of zero waste : the one that can be carried out by citizens on foot and the measures that should be carried out by governments to make this possible:

1. The 5R

To achieve this the movement zero waste is based on 5R : refuse reduce reuse recycle and rot . What in Spanish would be: reject consume what we do not need, reduce what we do need, reuse and repair what we consume, recycle the containers that allow it and decompose the rest, being able to use it as fertilizer or something like that.

2. Introduction to zero waste

In Fundacion Basura they give guidelines to replace what we consume in a sustainable way, by not using plastic and changing it by more durable options:

Last week we released a video from introduction to zero waste for people who are interested in changing their way of life for the health of the Planet. In the video we explained an introduction to change and we focused mainly on reducing plastic and on reducing on water we consume:

As we have said in video those who are vegans are in luck for the water issue; since l as people who have a vegan diet consume much less water . This is because the livestock sector consumes a lot of water . We see in this infographic an example:

Anyway, we can always try to go further and reduce our water consumption more : in the showers, trying to recycle the water that we use to rinse the food to water the plants and many other things that we can take into account. Although, as I said in the video, it does not seem right to have zero waste blogs in which they ignore the footprint left by the livestock sector and then save water on other things that, to my taste, are not as important or would be as supplement to carry a vegetable diet. Attached here an infographic that should put something on the meat but ignores it completely:

The plastic is a environmental problem quite important since very much ends up in the sea and is destroying marine life . In any house that recycles, surely the garbage of plastic containers exceeds the volume of organic . This is explained in a very simple way: we consume too much plastic . And we do not consume too much because we have developed a strange philia for the plastic, but because they put it in our eyes and is increasingly present in everything . When you buy food, when you buy technological products, when you go to a place and have cutlery, whenever you give us a bag in the supermarket, etc. In fact, unfortunately, there are more and more cases like this:

What causes each time, unfortunately, there are more cases of animals that end up like this:

What can we do for start reducing plastic ? The first thing we should do is observe our garbage to be aware of everything we pollute. After this we can decide from what things we could do without . There are two actions that we can carry out and that probably change a lot of things since they are very present in our day to day: reduce the water bottles and reduce the plastic bags that we consume. In addition to these two things, it is good that we begin to reduce packaged things that can be replaced by more ethical ones.

Reduce plastic bottles

This year The Guardian and The Journal said that " the world buys a million bottles of plastic per minute that end up in landfills or at sea ". These data are horrible, since microplastics have been found even in particles of sea salt, not to mention what affects the animals as we have said previously. Given these data we have to ask ourselves if we can continue to maintain this consumption and if it is sustainable to drink bottled water. The bad news is that it is not sustainable to drink bottled water and the good news is that there are several alternatives for when there is no drinking water:

Put an osmotic filter . In the long term it is a good solution if you have a stable home.

Use the brita jar to filter the water . It is economical and the water is quite good. Does it hit? What is plastic? Although of course, if you take into account the amount of water that can be saved, it is probably worth it.

– The bichotán is an active carbon ecological filter for water which reduces chlorine balances pH mineralizes and removes bad taste from tap water . To use it you just have to put it in a bottle of tap water and let it act.

Stop using plastic bags

It is very easy to stop using plastic bags . To do this, it is enough to always carry bags on top for emergency purchase or to carry cloth bags which can also be folded and occupy very little. This can help us to greatly reduce the consumption of bags especially in greengrocers, if we always carry the bags and thus we save ourselves a different bag for each type of fruit or vegetable that we buy. Regarding pickles, olives and nuts, it is a good option to bring tupperware or glass jars to be served in them instead of the typical plastic bag that later is useless

.

Reduce packaging

In addition to water bottles and plastic bags, we consume a lot of packaging . Many of these containers could be avoided or reused. Nowadays there are many shops where you can buy bulk products and natural cosmetics. Simply to stop buying the detergent in conventional supermarkets would make a world. In the video we get these walnuts for ecological washing that are from a store in which you can also leave bags and containers that we do not use. In addition, we can also make our own homemade soap:

Change toothbrushes

Another thing we can do is stop using plastic toothbrushes and move on to those of bamboo preferably biodegradable like these of Brushboo which also do not carry any plastic in the packaging .

Moving to the menstrual cup

It is also interesting to change tampons and pads for the menstrual cup . This will make save a lot of money (menstrual cup € 27 lasts for years, while each pack of tampax costs about € 4); that save a lot of waste and that save animal suffering since companies like tampax experiment with animals . There is also the option of using cloth compresses, which will be available to whomever is most comfortable.

Homemade natural cosmetics with glass containers

Another thing that can save a lot of plastic is to use natural cosmetics or make it homemade. The deodorant that comes out in the video is one that can be made homemade. The recipe is in the blog of Orgránico, that has a lot of zero waste recipes . L to most of the recipes of this blog and many others use coconut oil and sodium bicarbonate as a base. In addition vinegar and essential oils are also used to give a custom odor .

And you, what do you think of zero waste ? Do you dare to give the change?
